The Human Side of
Globalization: Nike in Indonesia - A Case Study
In their one-hour and thirty minute
interactive multi-media presentation, including slide
shows, music, role-playing, and powerful new video footage,
followed by a thirty minute question and answer period,
EFJ Directors, Leslie
Kretzu and Jim
Keady attempt to introduce their audience to the
human side of corporate globalization through the example
of Nike's operations in Indonesia.
The presentation details the time Leslie and Jim have
spent immersing themselves in the reality of the poor
in Tangerang, Indonesia. In August 2000, they lived
for one month in a factory workers' slum on $1.25 a
day, a typical wage paid to Nike's subcontracted workers.
Along with the personal accounts of lived solidarity,
the presentation also includes the latest information
on Nike's operations in Indonesia that EFJ has gathered
during research trips to Tangerang in 2001 and 2002.
To date, Leslie and Jim have visited more than 120 universities
and high schools across the country and have spoken
to over 20,000 students, administrators, faculty and
community members. They have shared their stories and
encouraged their supporters to learn more about the
human impact of globalization and also to take specific
action on behalf of justice for Nike's 130,000 Indonesian
workers.
