The Living Wage Project is a human rights initiative whose mission is to educate the public about the human stories of sweatshop workers and to educate the workers about their rights and worth in the global marketplace. Through such education, we strive to empower both workers and consumers to take action with the goal of establishing justice in the workplace and peace in our global family.
The Nike Shareholders for Justice campaign is a focused initiative aimed at educating and empowering Nike shareholders to act in a socially responsible manner with specific regard for the maintenance and respect of the rights of the women and men working in Nikes subcontracted factories.
The Nike Shareholders for Justice campaign will do the following:
- Purchase shares of Nike stock and take partial "ownership" of the company;
- Bring workers from Nikes subcontracted factories to the United States to share their human stories with Nike shareholders;
- Enact shareholder education programs to keep shareholders abreast of current developments in the lives of workers in Nikes subcontracted factories;
- Create an active lobby of concerned shareholders that will solicit support of large institutional holders to take action on behalf of the workers;
- Write and submit shareholder resolutions that will focus on improving the lived reality of the women and men producing for Nike in our subcontracted factories.
As mentioned above, the broad goal of the Nike Shareholders for Justice campaign will be to educate and empower shareholders to take action on behalf of Nikes subcontracted factory workers. It is our hope and belief that shareholders are not solely concerned with maximizing financial returns on their investment, but are committed to human rights and respecting basic human dignity through responsible investing and action.
The specific goals for the Nike Shareholders for Justice 2001 Campaign are:
- Full disclosure of factory locations for all of Nikes subcontractors;
- Establishment of a program whereby Nike will only subcontract with factories that are willing to:
a. Pay a living wage (a wage at least sufficient to meet the basic needs of a small family and allow some money for saving)
b. Bargain in good faith with independent unions
c. Allow for truly independent monitoring of our subcontracted factories (monitors to be accredited independently by the Workers Rights Consortium);
- Remove two particular clauses from Nikes endorsement contracts with Colleges and Universities and personal service agreements with college coaches. Clauses which state:
a. All coaches and athletes MUST wear the provided equipment
b. No coach or athlete can be critical of the Nike Corporation.
