As Educating for Justice has continued to grow and explore how it can best serve its constituency, a decision was made by EFJ's directors to revise its mission and its goals for the 2003-programming year. Given the success and the power of the educational short film that EFJ produced for use during its speaking tour events, there will be major focus on filmmaking in EFJ's current and future endeavors.
EFJ's new mission states:
Educating for Justice is an organization that educates the public about social justice issues through the use of grassroots education, the Internet and digital film technology.
EFJ's new annual goals include:
- Researching contemporary, cutting-edge social justice issues that have the potential for national attention, dialogue and action, and choosing one on which to focus our efforts.
- Producing one major full-length documentary film every two to three years on the social justice issue that is chosen from our research.
- Producing educational "shorts" on the chosen topic.
- Developing marketing and distribution plans for said film that will include theatrical, television, institutional, and home video releases with a heavy focus on the educational market.
- Developing and distributing study guides, lesson plans, and other educational materials for teachers and community leaders along with each documentary film.
- Conducting national grassroots education and action programs centered on the content of our documentary films.
- Establishing and maintaining a web presence that will serve as an educational resource for the topics on which our films will focus and a clearinghouse of information and resources for other filmmakers and educators who are working in the area of social justice.
- Developing revenue streams through film distribution, speaking tours, merchandise, and member-donor support that will significantly limit our need for foundational support.
This mission and goals are currently being pursued through our work on SWEAT and our Nike Corporate Accountability Campaign.

After months of talks with Indonesian union organizers and other labor advocates, Educating for Justice has announced that it will formally establish an Education and Resource Center in Tangerang, Indonesia for use by workers living in the region. With a long research and development process coming to close, EFJ hopes in the coming months to officially open this first international branch. EFJ directors, Jim Keady and Leslie Kretzu have narrowed the field of Indonesian candidates to direct this endeavor and hope that
everything will be in place and the center's doors will open by late summer of 2003.

Educating for Justice Films, the filmmaking arm of EFJ, is deep in production on the feature-length independent film, SWEAT - A Story of Solidarity. In the past few months the production team has done significant work on the project and all efforts are focused to have a final cut of the film completed for the September 2003 deadline for submissions into the Sundance Film Festival. EFJ Films is still in the process of seeking investors for the remaining finances needed
to complete production. If you are interested in investing in this project, please email us at educate4justice@aol.com.
