Claim Your .biz Brand
Buy Domains now proudly offers you the opportunity to claim your .biz domain. Now through July 9, 2001, trademark and service mark owners can submit IP (intellectual property) claim forms containing pertinent information in order to stake claim to .biz domain names. To clarify, the claims are not applications for registration, but are being compiled into a database against which all .biz registration applications will be compared. If there is an exact match, applicants are given the option of withdrawing the application or continuing with the application process. If the applicant elects to continue, the application will be placed on hold for 30 days and the claimant will be given the applicant's contact information. Disputes involving claims may be handled privately or through the Start-up Trademark Opposition Program (STOP) set up by the .biz registry. Pre-registration will run from June 25 to September 25, 2001. Any name receiving multiple applications will be granted to applicants on a randomized basis, so it is in your best interest to apply early and apply often.
***This opportunity to claim .biz domains is not to be confused with recent registrations schemes that charge exorbitant fees for "the chance" to possibly register .biz names when they become available. This is an official service provided by the .biz registry in conformation with Intellectual Property standards.***

INDUSTRY UPDATE
Can .co Make It as a Global Domain?
Colombia's country code TLD, .co, may soon be known as a global code. The manager of the .co domain, La Universidad de Los Andes, is proposing to open the registry to purchasers outside of the country. A similar attempt with .tv (Tuvalu's country code) has only met with marginal success. The university would use the .co registration fees to help fund scholarships and technological advancements. Some domains in the U.K are already being registered with the dual extension .co.uk. Other options include .com.co and .edu.co, but these names are more complicated and do not appear as frequently with the search engines. This proposal would allow the registration of names with just the .co TLD, such as www.yourdomain.co, as an alternative to www.yourdomain.com. As you know, the .com is the most frequently used and frequently remembered TLD on the Internet. While .co may be a viable option, reserving a .com domain is still the safest way to protect your online branding. Buy Domains looks forward to being one of the first registrars in the US to offer the .co extension when it becomes available.

First the Euro, Now .eu
The European Union is working hard to present a united continental front in the increasingly global economy. Not too long ago, it introduced the Euro as a standard currency that would be internationally accepted by the Union member countries. Now the European Union has shifted its focus to e-commerce and the potential for a geographically unified .eu TLD. Businesses and organizations throughout the Union would be able to claim domain space while demonstrating geographic identity and support. It has proposed that the .eu registry be non-profit and impose specific privacy policies on all registrants in order to build confidence in the industry. At the ICANN meeting earlier this month, .eu proponents sought approval for the proposed TLD. No firm commitment from ICANN was established, but the European Parliament will rule on the proposal sometime next month.

ICANN UPDATE
Quarterly Meeting Produces Mixed Results
ICANN's quarterly meeting was held in Stockholm, Sweden from June 1-4, 2001. The agenda included domain industry discussions of the seven new TLDs, alternative domain extensions, non-English domains, and organizational matters such as budgeting and structure. Business matters were resolved with little difficulty, but items regarding the domain industry were another story. The proposed ICANN budget was approved, and registrar application and accreditation fees were revised, however, little progress was made regarding domain industry developments.
Unofficial domain registration providers sought ICANN acceptance and there was general agreement about the need for additional domains. ICANN officials fear that these unofficial extensions create chaos on the Internet and refuse to acknowledge them without further deliberation.
The final day of meetings included an informal discussion of non-English domain names. ICANN recommended holding off on foreign language registrations until the new standards are set by the ICANN's Internationalized Domain Name agency in August. Members complained that ICANN is not acting quickly enough to accommodate the fast paced industry, but agreed to temporarily refrain from offering non-English registrations.
